[SB 212] A deloading week for writing

I’m Matt, and welcome to Steady Beats. If you like to walk for a better life, and also like Dire Straits’ “Walk of Life,” you just might like this newsletter.

I’m late this week, though I assume you don’t mind. I doubt you even noticed, actually.

There are some weeks in this writing game where you just don’t have it. Emotions, bandwidth, or just plain old over-repetition can get the best of us.

Right now, we are furiously at work getting ready for Write of Passage Cohort 11. It starts, officially, October 2. But under the hood, preparation is already hitting on all cylinders. It’s awesome, and it’s a lot of work.

But much like working out, I try not to take zeroes in my writing. If I’m overly tired and not up to a full workout, I’ll try to get in a walk, or even a two-mile run.

Something to get a win on the board for the day.

I’ll credit my friend Simone Silverstein for showing me not every newsletter has to be the equivalent of a half-marathon. Some weeks, a simpler, lighter approach is fine.

This is one of those weeks.

So that’s my message for this week. Whether it’s writing, working out, or whatever other activity you diligently, regularly, and strenuously take on, some weeks it’s ok to go light.

In strength training, we call that a deloading week. It’s great for rejuvenation, for resetting your body and your enthusiasm for the work, without a full stop.

There’s no reason writing should be different.

So here’s to a deloading week. Take it when you need it, like I am this week, and I’ll see you back here next week, recharged and ready to roll.
